The National Mission for Clean Ganga project was initiated during the Congress-led UPA regime, way back on August 12, 2011.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took the project further after they came to power.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is that the implementation wing of the National Ganga Council which was found out in October 2016 under the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management) Authorities order 2016. The order dissolved the National Ganga basin Authority.
The Modi-led government had released even but one-third of the entire amount committed towards the cleansing of the Ganga River.
During the past four years of the NDA government, the Namami Gange Programme is claimed to possess received only Rs 6,000 crore from its promised sum of Rs 20,000 crore, which was sanctioned for the resuscitation of the river.
The main objectives of this program were effectual desisting/curbing of pollution, and as discussed, sustention and rejuvenation of the river.
The fund released by the govt of India (GOI) till June 30, 2018, is nothing on the brink of the cash promised for the project. The Modi government had stated that Rs 2,037 has been released initially, but the particular scenario was totally different.
After all, Varanasi may be a major tourist attraction for max devotees who bathe within the holy river.
However, the statistics are appalling. A surplus of two, 500 coliform bacteria in 100 ml water was found, which was considered very unsafe for bathing.
Water samples collected from Varanasi’s Malviya Bridge revealed bacterial smirching, which was almost 20 times above its official measurable standards.
Another aftermath of this pollution is the death of aquatic life, along the banks of the river of this ancient city. the rationale behind this is often low oxygen in those areas. Corroboration within the ministry’s reply admitted a drop by the dissolved oxygen content at Assi Ghat, from 8.6 mg/l in 2014 to 7.5 mg/l in 2017.
The same contaminated river passes through many towns, cities, and villages before submerging itself within the Bay of Bengal.
As per GOI, not only Varanasi, but the Ganga is additionally absorbing waste from 144 drains of the five major states of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Out of 144 drains, the govt has managed to shut only 10 new drains, and therefore the rest overflow, with the bacterial contaminated, low oxygen water, which poisons the flowing Ganga.
Areas of operation:
The area of operation of NMCG shall be the Ganga basin, including the states through which the Ganga flows, also because of the capital Territory of Delhi. the world of operation could also be extended, varied, or altered in the future, by the Governing Council to such other states through which major tributaries of the Ganga River flow and as NGRBA may decide for the aim of effective abatement of pollution and conservation of the Ganga.
NMCG is initiated with a comprehensive approach to the challenges posed to Ganga through four different sectors, namely, wastewater management, solid waste management, industrial pollution, and riverfront development.
It’s developed a comprehensive strategy to revive the biodiversity value of the Ganga River with the last word goal to realize the NMCG future vision for Ganga River Conservation so that viable populations of all endemic and endangered aquatic species occupy their full historical range and fulfill their role in maintaining the integrity of the Ganga River ecosystems.
The proximate goal is to make sure that by 2020, a big reduction of threats to the species diversity of the Ganga River, either currently endangered or are likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future, is achieved.
