The first season of Game of Thrones follows the first novel of the series of books quite closely. The season begins on the Westeros continent with the emergence of a threat from beyond the Wall, where a Night’s Watch patrol kills a White Walker (a supernatural humanoid creature with milk-pale skin and glowing blue eyes).

Winterfell is visited south of the Wall by the King’s Landing royal family, King Robert Baratheon, Queen Cersei, her brothers Jaime and Tyrion Lannister, and the children of Cersei, including Prince Joffrey. King Robert asks Ned Stark to replace the recently deceased Jon Arryn as the Hand of the King (or Chief Advisor). And Ned agrees. Meanwhile, in the middle of an incestuous sexual act, Ned’s second youngest son, Bran, discovers Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime, and Jaime throws Bran out of the tower window, leaving him paralyzed. Shortly thereafter, Ned leaves Winterfell for King’s Landing with the royal family and brings with him his two children, Sansa and Arya.
