Chhath puja 2020, is a festival that is dedicated to Sun god Surya and his wife Usha who is also known as Chhathi Maiya.  During the pooja, people thank Lord Surya, who is considered the god of energy and life force for sustaining life on Earth.  It’s a Hindu Vedic festival that is historically native to the Indian Subcontinent which is celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.  The Chhath puja is dedicated to the solar deity Surya and Shashthi Devi in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on the Earth and to request the grant of certain wishes. The festival is observed by Nepalese and Indian people.

Chhath Puja is widely Celebrating in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh and in some cases in Punjab. There are no mansions in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Delhi, and Mumbai. The time of being the greatest chief of Bihar and Jharkhand, Chhath Puja is very memorable. Chhath Puja is one of the oldest prasutas narrated in the main Puranic scriptures. They include some attributes in the worship of God the Sun in the Vedas. Chhath pooja found a place in both the pages of Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to the Mahabharata, some important part of Lord Suraj is first found by some people. He does a course of sun worship and offerings in the water. It gradually became an apostle of roof worship. Later, Tropadi and the Pandavas persuaded him to return to his kingdom.

The festival does not involve any idolatry worship and is dedicated to the worship of the Chhathi Maiya and sun God Surya along with his wife Usha and Pratyusha, the Vedic Goddess of Dawn and Dusk in a respective manner. It is believed in the main sources of Sun’s powers are his wife Usha and Pratyusha. In Chhath Pooja, there is combined worshipping of both the powers along with the sun.  In the morning the first rays of the sun and the last ray of the Sun in the evening are offered to both of them. The rituals are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. It includes holy bathing, fasting,  abstaining from drinking water, standing in the water for a longer period of time, and offers Prasad and argrhya to the setting and rising of the sun. Some of the devotees perform a prostration march as they head towards the river bank.

Environmentalists have confirmed that the festival of Chhath is considered to be one of the eco-friendly religious festivals. It should be used for spreading the message of nature conservation. It spreads the ideas of equality, fraternity, unity, and integrity. Along with the text of religion, the views of the readers of Chhath Puja are also some science. To complete the discipline, the kilns have to stay sour along the rivers for a long time. So when you are in the morning and evening, the sun’s rays are most important during the sunrise and sunset. The sun’s rays are very useful in their parties and help in poisoning the body, mind, and soul.

The sun is considered to be the source of energy that supports life on earth. Therefore, during Chhath Puja, also known as Chhath Parab in some places, people thank the Sun God for supporting life and seek His blessings. People also ask Mr. Suraj for the longevity and prosperity of his family members and loved ones. Devotees thank the sun god with the first ray of the morning and the last ray of the evening.

Chhath Puja Celebration-

Chhath Puja is a 4-day festival that falls on Kartik Shukla Shasthi which is the sixth day of the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar.

1. Nāhai khaya –

The first day of Chhath Puja starts exactly 4 days before Diwali. Those who fast on this day first bathe in a river or pond and then at lunch they mix rice, lentils, or lentils with pumpkin to make pure ghee or clarified butter.

2. Lohanda and Kharna –

The second day of Chhath Puja celebrated 5 days after Diwali. This day is a bit difficult because the devotees have to fast all day.

3. Sandhya Arghya –

On 3 days of Chhath Puja (6 days after Diwali), devotees spend days at home preparing prasadam. Then in the evening, Vratis’ whole family went to the river with them. Devotees observe a “waterless fast” or fast on the third day without a drop of water.

4. Usha Arghya  –

On the last day, the pilgrims get up in the morning and prepare and return to the river before sunrise. They offer their prayers at sunrise.
